About the author

Born in Rochester, New York, in 1836, Augustus Hopkins Strong studied at Yale and then at Rochester Theological Seminary before beginning his ministry. He served as a Baptist pastor in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and later at First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1872, he became president of Rochester Theological Seminary, a role he held for about forty years, while also teaching systematic theology. During that long career, he became one of the most prominent Baptist thinkers in the United States.

Strong is remembered above all for Systematic Theology, a major work that was widely used in theological education and continued to be read long after his lifetime. He died in 1921, leaving behind a body of writing that reflects both pastoral concern and serious academic effort.
