About the author

Born in England in 1819, he moved to Western Australia with his family as a young man and built a career as a surveyor and explorer. He became known for a series of major expeditions across inland Australia, including journeys in the 1850s and 1860s that opened up knowledge of regions that were still little known to European settlers.

He later settled in Queensland, where he continued public work as Surveyor-General and became an important figure in colonial life. In addition to exploration, he was associated with the scientific study of Australia’s landscape and natural history, and his practical field experience gave his writing a strong sense of place.

Remembered for endurance, careful observation, and leadership in difficult country, he was knighted late in life and died in 1905. His name remains closely linked with Australian exploration and with the mapping of the interior during a period of rapid colonial expansion.
