About the author

Born in Porto on July 31, 1873, Augusto Gil was a Portuguese poet who also trained in law. He spent part of his youth in Guarda, a city strongly linked with his life and memory, and later became known both for his literary work and for public service.

His poetry is often described as joining Symbolist touches with satire and a clear, approachable lyric voice. That mix gave his work a broad appeal, and some critics see in his attention to nature and social hardship an early path toward Portuguese Neo-Realism.

Gil died in Guarda on November 26, 1929. Among his best-known works is "Balada da Neve," which helped secure his place as a lasting presence in Portuguese poetry.
