About the author

Born in Dunkirk on July 1, 1848, Auguste Angellier was a French poet and scholar who became the first professor of English language and literature at the Faculty of Letters in Lille. He later served as dean there from 1897 to 1900, playing an important role in the growth of literary studies at the university.

He was especially known as a literary critic and historian of literature. His doctoral work on Robert Burns, presented at the Sorbonne in 1893, brought him attention for challenging the ideas of Hippolyte Taine. Alongside his academic writing, he also wrote poetry, showing a strong interest in emotion, memory, and inner life.

Angellier died in Boulogne-sur-Mer on February 28, 1911. I found reliable biographical information about his career, but I could not confirm a suitable portrait photograph from the sources I checked, so no profile image is included.
