About the author

Born in Stade on December 10, 1816, August Karl Friedrich Christian von Goeben came from Hanoverian nobility but chose a military career in Prussian service while still very young. Early on, his path was anything but ordinary: dissatisfied with routine garrison life, he left to fight for Don Carlos in the First Carlist War in Spain, was captured, escaped, and later saw action in North Africa before returning to the Prussian army.

That unusually hard-won experience helped shape him into one of Prussia's most capable field commanders. He served with distinction in the major conflicts of German unification, including the wars of 1864, 1866, and 1870–71, and became especially known for his leadership in the Franco-Prussian War. His reputation was that of an energetic, fearless officer who combined personal bravery with real tactical skill.

Goeben died on November 13, 1880, in Koblenz. Remembered as a prominent Prussian general of infantry, he left behind both military memoirs and a career that stood out even in an era full of dramatic soldiers and state builders.
