About the author

Born in 1859, August Ramsay was a Finnish mathematician who earned his doctorate at the Imperial Alexander University in 1882. Early in his career he also worked as a teacher, but he soon moved into wider national roles where his analytical background found practical use.

Ramsay became Finland's first insurance reviewer in 1891, and later served as chief executive of the Finnish Urban Mortgage Fund. He went on to lead the Union Bank of Finland and was also active in public affairs, including service as Finland's finance minister. Across these roles, he was known less as a literary figure than as a mathematically trained organizer and institution-builder.

He died in 1943. Today he is remembered as a notable Finnish public figure whose career linked scholarship, finance, insurance, and government at a time when modern Finnish institutions were taking shape.
