A German-born journalist and publisher who built a lasting voice for German readers in the Netherlands, he also drew on his own years in the Dutch East Indies for his writing. His life moved from Bamberg to colonial service, then into newspaper work that connected expatriate communities across borders.

by August Prell
Born in Bamberg on February 13, 1856, August Prell was a German journalist, publisher, and writer. He is best known as the founder and editor of the Deutsche Wochenzeitung für die Niederlande, a long-running German-language newspaper in the Netherlands.
Before entering publishing, he served in the colonial army in the Dutch East Indies. That experience shaped at least part of his writing, including Ge-eft Acht! Schetsen uit het Indische soldatenleven, which reflects life in that military world.
Prell later settled in the Netherlands, where he became an important figure in German-language journalism for readers living there. He died in Bussum on June 28, 1926, leaving behind a career that joined reporting, publishing, and firsthand observation of life across several countries.
