A pharmacist and entrepreneur who turned careful kitchen science into one of Germany’s best-known food brands. His ready-to-use baking powder helped make home baking simpler and more reliable for everyday cooks.
Born in Obernkirchen, Germany, in 1862, August Oetker trained as a pharmacist and later earned a doctorate in botany. In 1891 he bought the Aschoff pharmacy in Bielefeld, where he began experimenting with baking ingredients and practical food products.
He became best known for developing a ready-to-use baking powder sold in measured packets, an idea that helped home bakers get more consistent results. That product laid the foundation for the company that became Dr. Oetker, which grew from a small pharmacy business into a major food brand.
Oetker died in Bielefeld in 1918, but his name remained closely tied to everyday baking and household cooking. His story is a good example of how scientific training, business sense, and attention to ordinary people’s needs can shape a lasting company.
