About the author

Born in 1862 in Obernkirchen, Germany, he trained as a pharmacist and later bought the Aschoffsche Apotheke in Bielefeld. Working from that pharmacy, he developed measured portions of baking powder that were reliable and easy for home cooks to use, selling them under the Backin name.

That idea proved hugely successful. By combining standardized recipes, small affordable packets, and strong advertising, he turned a pharmacy product into a household staple and laid the groundwork for the company that became Dr. Oetker.

He died in 1918, but his influence lasted well beyond his lifetime. August Oetker is remembered as the founder of a business that grew from baking ingredients into a major food brand, with roots in the practical, everyday needs of home kitchens.
