by Attila József
Born in Budapest in 1905, Attila József became one of Hungary’s most important modern poets. He grew up in poverty, lost his father early, and spent part of his childhood in foster care—experiences that shaped the compassion, anger, and sharp social awareness found in his writing.
He began publishing while still young and developed a voice that could be lyrical, intimate, political, and philosophically searching all at once. His poems often bring together everyday hardship, love, inner conflict, and big questions about dignity and justice, which is part of why they have continued to speak to new generations of readers.
József died in 1937 at the age of 32. Even with such a brief life, he left behind a body of work that secured his place as a central figure in Hungarian literature.
