About the author

Born in Impilahti in 1848, he became known in Finnish literary life as Arvi Jännes, the name under which many readers first met his poems. He is especially remembered for patriotic and lyrical works such as Herää Suomi, Karjala, and Väinölän lapset, which helped secure his place in Finnish cultural history.

Alongside his writing, he was an accomplished scholar of language. He studied at the Imperial Alexander University and went on to work as a professor of Finnish and related languages. His research focused on Finnish dialects and Finno-Ugric languages, and his academic work made him an important figure in the study of language in Finland.

His career also reached into public life: he served in the Senate of Finland from 1901 to 1905. That mix of poet, linguist, and statesman makes him an unusually rich author to discover today. He died in Helsinki in 1915, leaving behind work shaped by both scholarship and a deep sense of national culture.
