About the author

Born in Athens in 1848 to an Italian mother and a father of German background, Arturo Graf grew up between cultures and later studied at the University of Naples. He went on to teach Italian literature in Rome before becoming a professor at the University of Turin, where he spent much of his academic career.

Graf was known both as a poet and as a literary critic. His writing often carries a reflective, sometimes shadowed mood, while his scholarship joined careful research with a strong literary sensibility. He was also a co-founder of the Giornale storico della letteratura italiana, an important journal for literary studies in Italy.

He died in Turin in 1913. Remembered today for the way he balanced creative writing with serious scholarship, Graf stands out as a figure who linked poetry, criticism, and university life in modern Italian culture.
