About the author

Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, in 1855, Arthur William Clayden became an English earth scientist, natural historian, and educator. He studied at Christ's College, Cambridge, later taught science, and went on to play an important role in higher education in Exeter.

Clayden is especially remembered as the first Principal of the Royal Albert Memorial College, a predecessor of today's University of Exeter. Alongside his academic work, he wrote accessible books on the natural world, including Cloud Studies and The History of Devonshire Scenery, showing a strong gift for explaining scientific subjects in a way that interested general readers.

His writing reflects both careful observation and real enthusiasm for landscape, weather, and geology. That combination makes his work still appealing to readers who enjoy classic nonfiction shaped by curiosity and close attention to the world outdoors.
