About the author

Arthur Purefoy Irwin Samuels was an Irish officer and writer best known as the co-author of With the Ulster Division in France, written with Dorothy Gage Samuels. The book records the experience of the 11th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles (South Antrim Volunteers), and has lasted as a personal, detailed account of service on the Western Front.

Born in Dublin in 1887, Samuels was the son of Arthur Warren Samuels, who later became a prominent Irish lawyer, politician, and judge. During the First World War he served as a captain in the 11th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.

His life was cut short in the war: he died on September 24, 1916, aged 28. That early loss gives his work an added weight, since it stands not just as military history, but as a memorial to the men and world he knew firsthand.
