About the author

Arthur Peronneau Ford (1843–1910) was a South Carolina author, newspaper publisher, and former Confederate soldier. He served as a private in South Carolina artillery during the Civil War, taking part in engagements along the Carolina coast and later in the battles of Averasboro and Bentonville.

Ford is best known for Life in the Confederate Army, published in 1905. Written with contributions from his wife, Marion Johnstone Ford, the book combines his memories as a private soldier with sketches of Southern life and letters from the final months of the war.

After the war, Ford worked in business and later became publisher of the Aiken Recorder. He and Marion lived in Aiken, South Carolina, where their home became part of the city’s historic record.
