About the author

Born in 1880, he built his career around the study of prints and drawings and became closely associated with the British Museum, where he worked as a curator and later served as Keeper of Prints and Drawings. He was especially known for his deep knowledge of European printmaking and for bringing careful scholarship to artists such as Dürer, Rembrandt, and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione.

His writing reached well beyond the museum world. Works such as A History of Engraving and Etching and his catalogues of Italian and northern European prints became standard references, valued for their clarity and range as well as their close attention to individual works.

He died in 1957, but his reputation has lasted because he helped shape how prints were studied in the English-speaking world. For listeners interested in art history, he stands out as a guide who made a specialized subject feel organized, readable, and alive.
