About the author

Born in 1861, he is described in reference sources as an architect and writer, and his surviving books show a strong interest in making architecture understandable to learners. His published works include A Short History of Architecture, Design, A Selection of Works of Architecture and Sculpture, and an edition of Vignola's The Five Orders of Architecture.

Archival and art-history sources indicate that he was the son of diplomat and author Charles K. Tuckerman. He was educated in Europe and became associated with architectural study in the late nineteenth century, a period when illustrated handbooks and survey texts were becoming important tools for students.

Although his life was brief, ending in 1892, his books continued to circulate afterward and helped preserve his reputation as a concise and practical interpreter of architectural form and history.
