Born in 1865, Arthur Leslie Salmon wrote under the name Arthur L. Salmon and built a varied career as a poet, travel writer, and music critic. Reference sources consistently describe him as English and closely connected with Devon and other West Country settings, which shaped much of his writing.
He published poetry early in his career, including Haunted, and Other Poems, Songs of a Heart’s Surrender, and Other Verse, Life of Life, and Other Verse, and West Country Ballads and Verses. He also became known for guidebooks and literary travel works such as Literary Rambles in the West of England, along with books on places including Cornwall and Dartmoor.
Salmon died in 1952. Some later sources note that his poems were set by composers including Edward Elgar, which helps explain why his name still appears not only in literary catalogs but also in music reference works.
