About the author

Trained in Germany at Berlin University, the Royal Forest Academy at Tharandt, and Munich University, Arthur Harold Unwin built his career around forestry and botany. According to the British Museum, he later worked in Canada and then spent about 13 years in Nigeria, where he explored West African timber resources and studied forest conditions in detail.

He is best known for books including Future Forest Trees (1905), West African Forests and Forestry (1920), and Goat-Grazing and Forestry in Cyprus (1928). These works show a writer interested not just in trees themselves, but in how forests were managed, used, and changed by people.

Wikimedia’s species records identify him as a botanist and forester born on September 16, 1878, and dying on April 1, 1963. His writing remains valuable for readers interested in the history of forestry, colonial-era environmental study, and the close observation of landscapes in transition.
