About the author

Born in Elberfeld, Germany, on June 26, 1871, he moved to New York with his family as a child and built his academic life in the United States. He studied at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University, and went on to teach at Columbia for many years, eventually becoming Villard Professor of Germanic Philology.

Remy is best remembered for The Influence of India and Persia on the Poetry of Germany (1901), a study that traced literary connections between Europe and Asia at a time when comparative scholarship was still taking shape. He also contributed articles to the Catholic Encyclopedia, showing the range of his interests as a scholar of language, literature, and intellectual history.

He died on October 24, 1954. Though not widely known today, his writing still appeals to readers interested in German studies, comparative literature, and the long history of cultural exchange.
