About the author

Born in 1866 and active well into the 20th century, Arthur Cleveland Bent became one of the most respected American ornithologists of his era. He is especially remembered for launching the monumental Life Histories of North American Birds project in 1910 and spending the rest of his life trying to bring it to completion.

Rather than relying only on his own field notes, Bent assembled reports and observations from a wide network of naturalists. That collaborative approach helped make his bird accounts rich in detail and unusually broad in scope, covering behavior, nesting, and distribution in a way that appealed to both specialists and general readers.

Bent died in 1954, but his work continued to matter long after his lifetime. The multi-volume series associated with his name remained an important source for North American bird study, and he is still remembered as a careful, dedicated recorder of the continent’s birdlife.
