About the author

Born in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1866, Arthur Cleveland Bent developed his interest in birds early in life and kept that passion throughout his career. He studied at Harvard, later became a successful businessman, and used his time and resources to travel widely and observe birds across North America.

Bent is best remembered for his vast series Life Histories of North American Birds, an ambitious reference work produced with help from his own field experience, published research, and contributions from many other observers. The project began after a request from the Smithsonian Institution and grew into a 21-volume work, with later volumes completed after his death in 1954.

His writing helped gather an enormous amount of knowledge about bird behavior and natural history in one place, making it valuable to both dedicated bird students and general readers. Even today, he is often remembered as a major figure in American ornithology.
