About the author

Arthur Cheney Train was an American lawyer and writer, born in Boston on September 6, 1875, and educated at Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After moving to New York, he served in the district attorney’s office, where his firsthand experience with criminal cases gave his fiction its convincing legal detail.

That background shaped much of his best-known work. He wrote crime stories, courtroom novels, and nonfiction about the justice system, often blending sharp observation with an easy, readable style. His most famous creation was Mr. Ephraim Tutt, an eccentric but deeply capable lawyer who became popular with readers looking for clever legal drama with a human touch.

Train published widely in magazines and books across the early 20th century, building a career that connected the law, popular fiction, and public curiosity about crime. He died in New York on December 22, 1945, but his work still stands out as an early bridge between real legal practice and modern courtroom storytelling.
