Art Lewis

Born in England in 1873, Arthur Morrow Lewis became known in the United States as a lecturer, scholar, and popular writer on socialism, sociology, and evolution. He wrote for working-class audiences and published books including Evolution Social and Organic, An Introduction to Sociology, and The Art of Lecturing.

Lewis was closely associated with Chicago’s socialist and educational circles, and his work often tried to connect science, politics, and everyday life in a way that felt usable rather than abstract. Contemporary records also link him to public debates and lectures, showing how much of his career centered on speaking as well as writing.

He died in 1922, but many of his works remain available in the public domain. Today, he is remembered as a lively explainer of ideas who wanted learning to be open, practical, and connected to social change.
