About the author

Born in 1868 in Königsberg, Arnold Sommerfeld studied mathematics and the physical sciences there and earned his doctorate before moving into university teaching and research. He later became professor of theoretical physics at the University of Munich, where his work on atomic structure, spectra, and electron theory helped define the field in the early 20th century.

Sommerfeld is often remembered not only for his own scientific contributions, but also for his remarkable influence as a mentor. Students and assistants around him included several future Nobel Prize winners, and his clear, ambitious teaching made Munich an important center for theoretical physics.

He wrote respected textbooks and lecture-based works, including Atombau und Spektrallinien (Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines), which helped spread new ideas in physics to a wide audience. He died in 1951, leaving a legacy as both a pioneering theorist and one of the era's most important scientific teachers.
