About the author

Born in 1868 in Königsberg, Arnold Sommerfeld became one of the key figures in early twentieth-century physics. Reliable reference sources describe him as a German theoretical physicist, and he is especially remembered for important work on atomic structure, spectral theory, and the growing quantum theory.

He taught for many years at the University of Munich, where he built an influential school of theoretical physics. He is widely known not only for his own research but also for mentoring an extraordinary generation of students and younger colleagues who went on to transform modern physics.

Sommerfeld also wrote major scientific books, including Atombau und Spektrallinien (Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines), which helped explain difficult new ideas to scientists and students alike. He died in 1951, but his mix of mathematical rigor, teaching talent, and scientific imagination still gives his work lasting appeal.
