Arno Holz

1863–1929

A sharp, experimental voice in German naturalism, he pushed poetry and drama toward a rawer, more modern style. His work is closely tied to the literary ferment of late 19th- and early 20th-century Berlin.

About the author

Born in 1863 in Rastenburg, East Prussia, Arno Holz became one of the key figures of German naturalism. He worked as a journalist before devoting himself to literature, and his career was often marked by financial struggle even as his reputation grew.

Holz is especially remembered for trying to bring art closer to reality through precise, unsentimental detail. He wrote poetry, drama, and prose, and is often associated with literary experiments that challenged older conventions. Among his best-known works is Phantasus, and he also collaborated with Johannes Schlaf.

He died in Berlin in 1929. Today, Holz is remembered as an important innovator in modern German literature, especially for readers interested in the transition from traditional poetic forms to a more radical, modern voice.
