About the author

Founded in 1860 in Pittsburgh by Thomas Armstrong and John D. Glass, Armstrong Cork Company started by making hand-carved cork bottle stoppers. The business grew quickly, and by the late 19th century it had become one of the leading cork suppliers in the world.

The company later moved its center of operations to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and broadened its product line well beyond cork. It became especially known for linoleum and other flooring products, as well as acoustical materials, insulation, and glassware.

Armstrong Cork Company eventually evolved into Armstrong World Industries, reflecting how much the business had changed from its early cork-making roots. Its history traces a clear path from a small workshop to a nationally recognized industrial brand.
