Born Hermann Otto Nietschmann in 1840, he is better known by the pen name Armin Stein. He served for many years as an evangelical pastor in Halle, and alongside his church work he built a substantial career as a writer and composer.
Much of his writing draws on religious history, especially the Reformation, as well as well-known German historical figures. Books such as Luther and the Cardinal helped bring those subjects to a broad audience in a narrative style that feels closer to a story than a textbook.
He remained closely associated with Halle throughout his life and continued producing work over several decades. Armin Stein died in 1929, leaving behind a large body of historical and devotional writing that reflects both his pastoral background and his love of storytelling.
