About the author

Born on the island of Lefkada in 1824, Aristotelis Valaoritis became one of the best-known poets of the Heptanese School. He studied in Lefkada and later in Geneva, Paris, and Pisa, and his writing drew heavily on the struggles, heroes, and ideals that shaped modern Greek identity.

Valaoritis was not only a poet but also a public figure. He took part in political life and was remembered for the patriotic energy he brought to both his verse and his civic commitments. Many readers know him for poems centered on bravery, freedom, and the legacy of the Greek War of Independence.

He died in 1879 on Lefkada. His reputation has endured as that of a poet who gave national feeling a vivid, dramatic voice, and who remains an important presence in 19th-century Greek literature.
