by Ari Pitkänen
Born in Kuopio on June 20, 1876, Ari Pitkänen worked as a journalist before becoming known more widely as a writer. He wrote in Finnish and built a career that connected literature with the lively newspaper culture of his time.
Pitkänen was also active in politics. He served as a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1919 to 1922, representing the Agrarian League, which places him among those writers whose public life extended well beyond the page.
He died in Viipuri on January 15, 1938. Today he is remembered as a Finnish man of letters whose work sits at the meeting point of journalism, fiction, and public service.
