About the author

Tradition identifies him as a military strategist and general from the late Spring and Autumn period of ancient China, usually placed around the 5th century BCE. He is best known as the attributed author of The Art of War, a compact work on warfare, deception, discipline, and judgment that became one of the best-known strategy texts in history.

Details about his life are difficult to confirm, and historians have long debated how much of the traditional biography is factual. Even so, the book associated with him had an enormous afterlife in China and far beyond it, influencing military study, political thought, and later readers interested in leadership and competition.

What keeps his work alive is its clarity. Rather than celebrating brute force, it stresses preparation, flexibility, understanding opponents, and winning with the least possible cost. That practical, unsentimental voice is a big reason The Art of War still feels surprisingly modern.
