by Antoon Jozef Witteryck
Born in Oostkamp on June 6, 1865, he became known in Belgium as a teacher, publisher, and promoter of Esperanto. He was among the country’s early Esperantists, and many of his works were written or published to make the language more accessible to new readers.
His career reached beyond language instruction. He published schoolbooks, moral and historical works for younger readers, and writings connected with folklore, and he also wrote travel-related work, including Une excursion au Congo belge. He is often listed under the name A.J. Witteryck.
He died on July 3, 1934, in Bruges. Remembered both for his own books and for his role in publishing, he stands out as a writer who linked education, popular reading, and the international ideal of Esperanto.
