About the author

Born in São Miguel do Mato, Arouca, in 1850, António José da Costa Couto Sá de Albergaria was a Portuguese professor, journalist, dramatist, and writer. He also published under the pen names João Chorinca and Gabriel da Rasa, building a career that stretched across newspapers, novels, and popular theater.

Much of his energy went into journalism. Sources describe him as part of the editorial staff of several humorous newspapers, including papers he founded, and as a longtime writer for Jornal de Notícias, where his satirical verse column became especially popular. That mix of humor and social criticism seems to have shaped the tone that made him stand out.

He also wrote fiction and stage works. Among the titles most often associated with him are O Segredo do Eremita and Os Filhos do Padre Anselmo (1904), along with theatrical pieces such as O Brasileiro Pancrácio and the operetta O Diabo Louro, which opened Teatro Carlos Alberto in Porto in 1897. He died in 1921.
