About the author

Born in Góis, Portugal, on January 1, 1836, António Francisco Barata came from humble beginnings and did not receive an extensive formal education. As a boy he went to Coimbra to work in a barbershop, but he continued learning on his own and developed the broad knowledge that would define his career as a writer and researcher.

Barata became known as a self-taught man of letters whose work moved across several fields, including history, philology, bibliography, and popular tradition. Library records and bibliographic sources connect his name with books such as Cancioneiro portuguez, Miscellanea historico, and Évora e seus arredores, showing both the range of his interests and his close attention to Portuguese cultural life.

He later settled in Évora, the city most closely associated with his mature work, and died there on April 23, 1910. Remembered as an erudite and hardworking author, he remains notable for turning a difficult start in life into a substantial literary and historical legacy.
