About the author

Born in 1850 in the Amarante area of northern Portugal, António Cândido Ribeiro da Costa became known simply as António Cândido. He studied both law and theology at the University of Coimbra, then built a career that joined scholarship, teaching, and public life.

He became famous in Portugal as an exceptional orator in parliament, earning lasting recognition for the force and elegance of his speeches. Contemporary and later accounts also remember him as an intellectual deeply engaged with political thought, and as one of the figures associated with the development of modern political science in Portugal.

Alongside his political career, he published speeches, conferences, and other writings, which helped preserve his influence beyond the chamber. He died in 1922, but he remains a notable figure in Portuguese public and cultural history.
