About the author

Born in Lisbon on December 28, 1852, António Arthur Baldaque da Silva built a career that joined naval service with scientific study. He attended military and naval schools, served on ships that took him through Portugal, Africa, the Far East, and South America, and later specialized in hydrography.

His work ranged across oceanography, hydrography, biology, and fisheries. He helped organize coastal navigation guides for Portugal and became especially known for Estado Actual das Pescas em Portugal (1891), a landmark study of Portuguese fishing methods, species, boats, and fishing communities. He was also involved in public projects linked to Lisbon harbor and early fish-culture efforts in Portugal.

After retiring from the navy for health reasons, he entered politics and was elected a senator for the district of Coimbra in 1914. He died in Lisbon on August 21, 1915, remembered as a sailor, engineer, and careful observer of Portugal’s maritime world.
