About the author

Born in Reus in 1821 and later active in Barcelona, Antoni de Bofarull i Brocà was a remarkably versatile writer: historian, archivist, philologist, novelist, poet, and dramatist. He belonged to the Catalan Renaixença, the 19th-century cultural movement that renewed Catalan literature and identity.

He spent much of his professional life at the Archive of the Crown of Aragon, where his archival work went hand in hand with his historical writing. Alongside studies of Catalonia's past, he also wrote creative works in verse and prose, showing the same curiosity for language and history across different genres.

Bofarull is remembered as one of the figures who helped bring prestige and energy back to Catalan letters. He died in Barcelona in 1892, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both deep scholarship and a lasting commitment to Catalan culture.
