About the author

Born in Ponta Delgada in the Azores on April 18, 1842, he became one of the central literary figures of 19th-century Portugal. He studied at the University of Coimbra and emerged as a leading spirit among the young writers later linked with the Generation of Coimbra, a group that challenged older literary fashions and argued for a new role for literature in modern life.

He was known not only as a poet but also as a philosopher and public intellectual. Alongside poetry, he wrote essays and engaged with the political and social debates of his time, including questions shaped by socialism, modern thought, and the future of Portuguese culture. Readers especially remember him for his sonnets, which bring together emotional intensity, doubt, idealism, and a strong inward discipline.

His life was marked by periods of inner struggle, and he died in Ponta Delgada on September 11, 1891. Even so, his work continued to grow in stature, and he is now widely regarded as one of the major voices in Portuguese-language poetry.
