About the author

Born in Ponta Delgada in the Azores in 1842, Antero de Quental became one of the central literary voices of modern Portugal. He studied at the University of Coimbra, where he emerged as a sharp critic of cultural and political complacency and became closely associated with the reform-minded circle later known as the Generation of 1870.

Quental wrote poetry, essays, and polemical texts, but he is especially remembered for his sonnets, which join emotional intensity with big philosophical questions about faith, doubt, justice, and the meaning of life. He also took an active interest in social ideas and public debate, bringing unusual moral seriousness to both his literature and his criticism.

His life was marked by periods of illness and inner struggle, and he died in 1891. Even so, his writing has endured for its clarity, intelligence, and depth, and he remains a major figure in Portuguese-language literature.
