About the author
Anselmo Evaristo de Morais Sarmento was born in Aveiro on July 5, 1847, and died in Buçaco in 1900. He later settled in Porto, where he built a reputation as an editor, printer, and businessman involved in communications and publishing.
He is closely linked with the Gazeta Literária do Porto, also known as the “Gazeta de Camilo Castelo Branco,” a weekly publication that featured work by major Portuguese literary figures. The paper included Camilo Castelo Branco as its principal writer, and a dispute over authorship and payment eventually contributed to its closure.
Married to Rita de Cássia de Oliveira e Moraes, Sarmento was the father of five children. His daughters included Rita de Morais Sarmento, recognized as Portugal’s first woman to earn a civil engineering degree, and three daughters who studied medicine.
