About the author

Born in Helsinki on January 4, 1875, Anni Swan became one of the best-known early writers of Finnish children's and young adult literature. She studied at the Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary, worked as a teacher in Helsinki, and later wrote under her married name, Anni Manninen.

Swan wrote novels, fairy tales, and other works for young readers at a time when Finnish-language children's literature was still taking shape. She is widely remembered as an important early classic of the field, and she also translated books into Finnish and edited children's magazines, helping guide young readers and aspiring writers alike.

She died in Helsinki on March 24, 1958. Her long career left a lasting mark on Finnish literary culture, especially through stories for girls and young people that remained popular well beyond her lifetime.
