About the author

Born in Govan, Scotland, on August 17, 1866, she became known as an artist and author who specialized in embroidery. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and went on to teach there, building a career that linked studio practice with clear, useful instruction.

From 1912 to 1931, she taught subjects including embroidery, china painting, and decorative leatherwork at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1928 she succeeded Ann Macbeth as head of the embroidery department, and in 1939 she won the Lauder Prize for her needlework.

She is best known as the author of An Embroidery Book (1920), a practical guide that reflects her belief that embroidery could be both artistic and approachable. She died in Glasgow on November 6, 1949.
