About the author

Born in Somerset in 1816, Anne Beale was educated there and began working as a governess before settling in Carmarthenshire in 1841. She built a long literary career from Wales, writing novels, poems, short fiction, and articles over more than fifty years.

Beale became known as a popular Victorian writer whose books included fiction for adults as well as stories for younger readers. She also contributed pieces on Welsh life and interests to English magazines, helping introduce Welsh settings and character to readers outside the country.

She later moved to London, where she died on 17 April 1900. Although not as widely remembered today as some of her contemporaries, she was a steady and successful presence in 19th-century print culture, with a body of work that reflects both popular Victorian taste and her close connection to Wales.
