1816–1900
Known for vivid stories of Welsh country life, this long-running Victorian writer published novels, poems, and tales for more than half a century. Her work helped bring everyday communities in Carmarthenshire to a broad English-speaking readership.

by Anne Beale
Born in Somerset in 1816, Anne Beale was educated in Bath and began her working life as a governess. In 1841 she settled in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, and Wales became the lasting setting and inspiration for much of her writing.
She wrote poetry, novels, and short fiction, with a career that stretched across more than 50 years. Beale became especially associated with stories of Welsh rural life and is remembered for presenting local customs and character in a way that appealed to Victorian readers.
She died on April 17, 1900. Though not as widely read now as some of her contemporaries, she remains an interesting figure in 19th-century literature for the way she connected English-language popular fiction with Welsh places and communities.
