About the author

Born in 1868, Anna Milo Upjohn was an American artist, illustrator, author, and relief worker. She studied art in New York and Paris, built a career as an illustrator for magazines and children's books, and later became especially known for her work connected with the American Red Cross.

Her life seems to have blended art with service. During and after World War I, she worked in Europe with Red Cross efforts, and that experience shaped some of her later writing and illustration. Books such as Friends in Strange Garments show her interest in children’s lives across different countries and cultures.

Upjohn died in 1951. Today she is remembered as a versatile creative figure whose career moved between painting, illustration, humanitarian work, and books for younger readers.
