Born Anna Letitia Guise in Sacramento, California, in 1864, she later became Anna L. Colcord after marrying Willard Allan Colcord. She was an American writer and editor whose life and work were closely connected to Seventh-day Adventist publishing.
She is most remembered for A Friend in the Kitchen, a vegetarian cookbook first published in 1889. The book offered hundreds of recipes along with plainspoken guidance on healthful cookery, food combinations, and household use, which helped make it appealing to ordinary families as well as readers interested in vegetarian reform.
Later, while working with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Australia, she prepared an expanded Australian edition of the cookbook. She died in 1950, and her writing remains of interest today through library collections, historical references, and public-domain editions.
