About the author

Born in Utica, New York, on August 3, 1828, he grew up near Barre in a fruit-growing region and later became an American horticulturist, author, and editor. He wrote extensively about cultivation and rural practice, especially small fruits, grapes, trees, and nut-bearing plants, building a reputation as a clear and practical gardening writer.

His books include The Illustrated Strawberry Culturist, The Grape Culturist, The Forest Tree Culturist, and The Nut Culturist. He also edited Woodward's Record of Horticulture and contributed writing on insects and plant pests, reflecting a wider interest in economic entomology as well as horticulture.

Later accounts describe him as living in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he developed his grounds through his own horticultural work. He died on May 4, 1896, leaving behind a body of writing that connected everyday cultivation with close observation of plants, trees, and the problems growers faced.
