About the author

Born in Graaff-Reinet in the Cape Colony on May 9, 1828, Andrew Murray Jr. became a leading minister in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. He studied in Scotland and the Netherlands, was ordained in 1848, and went on to serve congregations including Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington.

Murray was more than a pastor. He was also an educator, revival leader, and organizer of missionary work, and he helped shape church life in South Africa during the nineteenth century. Over time he became known far beyond his own country through books centered on prayer, holiness, surrender, and life in Christ.

His devotional writing has remained especially influential because of its direct, earnest tone. Readers still return to books such as Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, and Humility for their simple but searching call to spiritual depth.
