About the author

Born on May 9, 1828, in Graaff-Reinet in the Cape Colony, he became a leading minister in the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa. He studied in Scotland and the Netherlands, was ordained in 1848, and went on to serve congregations including Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington.

He was known not only as a pastor and preacher but also as an educator, revival-minded church leader, and organizer of missionary work. Across a long public ministry, he helped shape evangelical spirituality in South Africa and wrote extensively on prayer, holiness, faith, and life in Christ.

His books remain widely read because they are direct, earnest, and devotional rather than academic. Writing from personal conviction and pastoral experience, he returned again and again to themes of abiding in Christ, complete dependence on God, and the power of prayer until his death on January 18, 1917.
