About the author

Born in Glasgow on November 13, 1844, he moved to Melbourne with his family as a boy and was educated at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne. He went on to become a teacher and a major figure in Australian Presbyterian education, serving at Scotch College and later as principal of Ormond College.

Alongside his work as an educator, he was a respected biblical scholar, especially in Hebrew and the Old Testament. He is best remembered as the author of The Book of Deuteronomy for The Expositor’s Bible series, and he also wrote on The Song of Solomon and produced a memoir of James Balfour.

After retiring, he returned to Scotland, where he died in Edinburgh on November 25, 1936. Although he did not leave a huge body of published work, his reputation rested on the quality of his scholarship and on the influence he had as a teacher, college head, and interpreter of scripture.
