Andrew Brown

1844–1915

A Civil War veteran from Illinois, he turned his memories of service into a compact regimental history that preserves the names and experiences of his fellow soldiers. His surviving work is valued less as literary display than as a firsthand act of remembrance.

About the author

Andrew Brown (1844–1915) is known for Company K, Twentieth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry: Roster and Record, April 24, 1861–July 16, 1865, published in 1894. The book grew out of a reunion of survivors of the 20th Illinois Regiment, where he was assigned to prepare a roster of Company K, and it was intended for veterans, descendants, and relatives.

Available historical notes identify him as a member of Company K of the 20th Illinois Infantry and connect him with Newark, Illinois. A memorial record says he was born on April 7, 1844, in Kendall County, Illinois, to Irish parents, served from 1861 to 1864, and died on August 30, 1915, in Aurora, Illinois.

Brown’s lasting reputation rests on the way he recorded local and military history. Rather than writing a broad war narrative, he focused on the men of one company, creating a practical, personal record that still helps readers trace the human side of the Civil War.
