Professor emeritus of Spanish at the University of Virginia, he studied at Oxford University, where he earned a B.A., M.A., and D.Phil., and later taught at both Oxford and the University of Michigan before joining Virginia.
His work centers on later nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish literature, with a special focus on poetry and on Federico García Lorca. Over the years he has written numerous books and scholarly studies, including Configurations of a Cultural Scene: Young Artists and Writers in Madrid, 1918–1930, and has prepared several critical editions of Lorca’s writings.
