A leading Danish architect around 1900, he also wrote carefully observed studies of historic buildings. His work blends practical architectural skill with a deep interest in Denmark’s older churches and traditions.

by Andreas Lauritz Clemmensen
Born in Læk, Schleswig, in 1852 and later educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Andreas Lauritz Clemmensen became one of Denmark’s notable architects in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was especially associated with historicist and nationally inflected architecture, and he went on to serve as a royal building inspector.
Alongside his architectural practice, he wrote about historic church buildings. The book linked to this name in major library records, Beskrivelser og tegninger af Øster Marie Kirke med særlig hensyn til den oprindelige form, reflects his close attention to structure, style, and preservation—qualities that also shaped his architectural career.
Clemmensen died in Copenhagen in 1928. Today he is remembered not only for the buildings he designed, but also for the way he documented and interpreted Denmark’s architectural heritage.
