Born Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, Ohio, she became one of the most prolific and influential American writers of speculative fiction. She published under the name Andre Norton, and also used Andrew North and Allen Weston. Over a career that lasted for decades, she wrote science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, and adventure stories for both younger readers and adults.
She is especially remembered for helping shape modern young-adult science fiction and fantasy. Her books often blend exploration, ancient mysteries, telepathy, and richly imagined cultures, with well-known series including Witch World and Solar Queen. Readers and writers alike have credited her with making the genre feel welcoming and exciting at an early age.
Her impact was widely recognized during her lifetime. She was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy, and she later received the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master honor. She died in 2005, but her stories remain a gateway into classic fantasy and science fiction.
