About the author

Born in Dieppe in 1877, André Lebey was a French writer, poet, novelist, and historian who also played an active role in politics. Sources agree that he was closely involved with socialist and cooperative movements, and he served as a deputy for Seine-et-Oise during the First World War era.

Alongside his political life, he built a broad literary career. He published poetry early on, wrote historical works, novels, and essays, and was remembered as part of the lively French literary world of his time, with ties noted by archival and reference sources to figures such as Paul Valéry and Pierre Louÿs.

Lebey died in Paris in 1938. Today he is best remembered as a versatile figure whose books sit at the meeting point of literature, history, and civic commitment.
